What Questions Should I Ask a Marketing Agency Before Hiring Them?

This is just a quick blog which we will expand on frequently. But suffice it to say that when you interview a digital marketing agency, some key things need to happen. Knowing what questions to ask them is as important as what questions they are asking you.

First of all, hiring a marketing agency is a lot like finding a good mechanic…you ask around, you talk to other businesses whose websites and marketing seem to be in good shape, you talk to the local Chamber. But when it comes down to it, you’re taking a lot on faith. So here are some tips to take some of the guesswork out of hiring the right marketing agency to help your business excel.

We’ve compiled a short list of things to consider. Not necessary specific questions, but more items of note.

  • How long has the agency been in business and what are the collective years of experience in the field of the principals in the agency?
    A. It’s nice to know that they will most likely be around for a while and not leave you hanging.
  • What are your marketing goals? What are you trying to accomplish?
    A. Your agency can help guide you, but you need to come to the table with a clear plan on why you want to hire an agency.
  • Do you have a marketing budget?
    A. Have some sort of idea of what you can spend and what you hope to gain. Otherwise you will just be wasting your time.
  • What are they asking you?
    A. A seasoned agency will know what to ask you. Those questions may be different depending on what you need. But the conversation should be focused on you and your needs, not them. The initial meeting should be about your company, your goals and what your expectations should be.
  • If you are uncomfortable at the first meeting, don’t discount that. It may not be a good fit.
    A. Just because an agency looks good on paper, doesn’t mean that they are right for your company. There has to be a synergy and compatibility there, if a long-term relationship is to work.
  • There should be some basic credentials expected. Does someone at the agency actually have a degree in business/marketing/graphic design/computer science etc?
    A. Be sure that the team you hire has the skills to accomplish what you need.
  • Ask your potential agency if they plan to provide a plan of action.
    A. Once the goals have been determined, you should expect to know exactly how they plan to achieve them. They shouldn’t need micromanaging, but you should be kept informed every step of the way.
